Kate Forbes MSP is from Dingwall, although she spent part of her upbringing in Glasgow and India. Until she was elected as MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, Kate was employed as an accountant in the banking industry. Prior to that she studied History at the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh with a focus on human migration.

As a backbencher, she has served on the Scottish Parliament’s Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee, the Standards, Procedures and Public Appointments Committee, the Health and Sport Committee and the Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee. She also served as Parliamentary Liaison Officer for Finance and the Constitution.

As well as leading a campaign to ban plastic straws, Kate has participated in several cross party groups at Holyrood including Crofting, Gaelic, Human Trafficking, Palliative Care and Rural Policy. A fluent Gaelic speaker, Kate made history earlier this year by becoming the first female MSP to give a plenary speech entirely in Gaelic in the current Scottish Parliament chamber.

DSU Nicola Burnett. DSU Burnett joined Strathclyde Police in 1995 and on completion of probation joined the CID. She has worked in both reactive and proactive CID Units. In 2006 she was promoted to DS and headed a proactive unit in the north of Glasgow and then assumed responsibility for Glasgow North East Offender Management Unit, ensuring that the new MAPPA structures were incorporated into daily business. In 2008 DSU Burnett was seconded to the Scottish Government Public Protection Unit as a Policy Advisor; briefing ministers on the development and roll out of MAPPA within Scotland. In 2010 she returned to CID duties and in 2011 was appointed as Acting Inspector Safer Communities for Giffnock and Barrhead. In 2011 she was promoted to DI and undertook a review of Offender Management within Strathclyde Police and was instrumental in the implementation of a consistent management and review structure in the Force which was consequently adopted nationally. In 2014 she was appointed to the Family Protection Unit DI for Glasgow and in 2015 was promoted to DCI Specialist Crime Division. Initially posted to Crime Strategy and Coordination where she had responsibility for the delivery of outstanding projects and policy to establish SCD. In 2015 DSU moved to OCCTU, Covert Operations where she managed the various specialist resource providing covert services to the Force. In May 2017 she was promoted to DSU where she currently heads the Cyber Investigations & Digital Forensics Teams for Scotland as well as leading a programme of work considering both cyber and technical surveillance capabilities.

Dr Kami Vaniea is a Lecturer in Cyber Security and Privacy in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. She heads the Technology Usability Lab In Privacy and Security (TULIPS), with current projects including: managing phishing, barriers to software update installation, making safe online choices, and helping app designers more easily make secure choices. Bill Buchanan is a Professor in the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University, a Fellow of the BCS, and a Principal Fellow of the HEA. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to cybersecurity.

Bill lives and works in Edinburgh, and is a believer in fairness, justice, and freedom. His social media tagline reflects his strong belief in changing the world for the better: “A Serial Innovator. An Old World Breaker. A New World Creator.” He has a strong belief in the power of education, and in supporting innovation from every angle.

Over the years, Bill has developed a deep love of all things related to cryptography, especially in the areas of Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP), homomorphic encryption, lightweight cryptography, quantum-robust cryptography, and blockchain methods.

Bill is a prolific creator of academic and research work, and is now working on books related to Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and AI and Cybersecurity. Over the past few years he has also developed one of the most extensive cryptography sites on the Internet (asecuritysite.com). His work has included 29 academic books and over 300 academic papers, along with being an editor-in-chief for the Journal of Cyber Security Technology and for a Cybersecurity series of books.

In 2018, in partnership with Blockpass IDN, he set up the world’s first blockchain identity research laboratory. Bill also currently leads the Centre for Distributed Computing and Security, and The Cyber Academy.

Bill’s research has led research work which has led to three successful spin-out companies (Zonefox, Symphonic and Cyan Forensics), and he has developed a number of patents. Bill’s work has shown extensive impact, and this was awarded an “Outstanding Contribution to Knowledge Exchange” award at the Scottish Knowledge Exchange awards, and a Cyber Evangelist of the Year award in 2016. Recently his work on Secret Shares received “Innovation of the Year” at the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards.

Bill regularly appears on TV and radio, related to computer security and has given evidence to both the UK and Scottish parliaments. He was also included in the FutureScot “Top 50 Scottish Tech People Who Are Changing The World”.

Bill’s work has involved the transformation of our current thinking within a number of knowledge domains, including health and social care, law enforcement, and government services. At the core of this work is the building of new citizen-focused worlds, and in creating trusted worlds.
