Chief Executive of NHS Scotland and Director General for Health and Social Care
The Scottish Government
Caroline trained as a Chartered Accountant in London. After qualifying she came to Scotland and worked first in housing and then in education. Caroline joined the NHS in 2004, as Director of Finance and Corporate Resources for NHS Education for Scotland, and was appointed as Chief Executive of NHS Education for Scotland in 2015. Caroline moved into Scottish Government in December 2019 to lead the Digital Health and Care Directorate. As we moved into March 2020, and the reality of living with the Covid-19 pandemic, Caroline was asked to take on other roles; first of all leading on the ICU surge requirements; from May acting as Portfolio Director for Test and Protect; and then, from August, becoming Delivery Director for the Extended Seasonal Flu and Covid-19 vaccination programmes. Caroline was appointed Chief Executive NHS Scotland, and Director-General Health & Social Care in January 2021.
